1. New Rs 50 note to hit market soon, old note to continue,

A new fluorescent blue Rs 50 banknote in the Mahatma Gandhi series, slightly smaller and slimmer than the existing note will soon be introduced by the Reserve Bank of India.

All earlier notes will also continue to be legal tender. The dimensions of the new note will be 66mm x 135mm. While the height is the same as the new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 banknotes which were issued after demonetization, the width is lesser than the Rs 500 banknote.

Besides the colour and the dimensions, a unique feature of the new banknote is the motif of Hampi with the chariot and the Swachh Bharat logo with the slogan on the reverse.

The RBI on Friday disclosed the new-look Rs 50 note and provided details of the new security highlights. The announcement came after images of the new note started doing the rounds on social media. The central bank, however, remained mum on the Rs 200 note, which has also been cleared according to sources

3. NHAI Launches Mobile App MyFASTag and FASTag Partner

National Highways Authority of India has launched two mobile Apps, MyFASTag and FASTag Partner. These mobile apps will help in the availability of FASTags for Electronic Toll Collection. The cumbersome method of purchase and recharge of FASTags has been one of the major challenges. The mobile Apps launched will ease the process, making it possible to buy or recharge FASTags at the click of a mobile button. MyFASTag is basically a consumer App that can be downloaded from the App Store for both Android and iOS systems. A consumer can purchase or recharge FASTags on this App. The App also helps to keep track of transactions and provides for online grievance redressal.

From 1st October 2017, all lanes of all 371 NHAI toll plazas in the country will become FASTag enabled. One lane in every toll plaza will be a dedicated FASTag lane where no other form of payment will be accepted. The other lanes, though FASTag enabled, can accept other forms of payment too. The dedicated FASTag lanes will become operational on all 371 NHAI toll plazas from 1st September 2017. Meanwhile, FASTag Partner is a merchant App. Agencies like Common Services Centre, banking partners and vehicle dealers can sell and enrol FASTag through this App. In addition to this, the App can also be used to activate the RFID tags that came built in with around 74 lakh cars in the country following the 2013 Gazette Notification in this regard.

The Goa government today launched three biofuel-powered buses here on a pilot basis. The project is a part of the state government’s comprehensive mobility plan announced in the recent budget. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar launched the project by taking the first ride in the bus, which will be operated by Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL), a state-run body. Talking to reporters later, Parrikar said, “We had announced that the state will introduce a comprehensive mobility plan for the entire state. Total Rs 150 crore have been earmarked for the purpose in the state budget, which was tabled recently.”

5. Lakshya Sen beats Zvonimir Durkinjak, wins Bulgarian Open International crown.

The Uttarakhand shuttler, who celebrated his 16th birthday on Wednesday, defeated second seed Zvonimir 18-21, 21-12, 21-17 in a 57-minute match. He had beaten Sri Lanka’s Dinuka Karunaratna 21-19, 21-14 in the semi-finals yesterday.

7. Government extends GST return filing date to August 25.

The government on Saturday extended till August 25 the last date for filing returns and payment of taxes under the GST regime after the GSTN portal faced technical issues because of a huge rush.

Earlier, the cut-off for filing maiden GST returns for July was scheduled to end on Sunday, August 20, which explained the heavy traffic at ‘www.gst.gov.in’.

7. Government extends GST return filing date to August 25.

But the portal suffered technical glitches as it was unable to take the load. The government has now extended the deadline by 5 days.

In a statement, the finance ministry said: “The GST Implementation Committee, consisting of state and central government officers, has taken a decision to extend the last date for payment of GST for July 2017 to August 25, 2017.”

It said certain flood-hit states as well as Jammu and Kashmir had sought an extension.
For taxpayers who have to claim credit for past taxes paid by filing form TRANS 1, the last date for returns will be August 28.

“In order not to face any last moment technological difficulty in submission of returns, all taxpayers are requested to kindly file their return well before 25th / 28th of August 2017 and not wait for the last date,” the ministry said.

Forwards Robin Singh and Balwant Singh struck on either side of the break as India beat 160th ranked Mauritius 2-1 in their opening encounter of the AIFF Tri-Nation Football tournament, in Mumbai on Saturday.

The tournament is being seen as a preparatory one for upcoming Asian Cup Qualifiers against Macau and the home team had to sweat more than they would have expected against a team ranked 63 places below in the FIFA rankings.
